The 76 is the practical one. Five seats, a proper boot, and a roof Toyota delivered completely bare. That last part is where a 76 Series roof rack comes in. Load the wagon for a fortnight away and the boot disappears under the fridge, the food and the bedding, and the second row starts collecting the overflow. Moving the awning, the tent and the fuel up onto the roof gives the family back the inside of the car, which on a long drive matters more than the extra capacity does.

PLATFORMS FOR ACCESSORIES, BARS FOR SIMPLE LOADS

There are two ways to go. A flat platform gives you a continuous mounting surface with a standard accessory pattern, which is what you want if awning brackets, tent mounts, shovel holders and light bars are all going on over time. A set of load bars is the simpler and cheaper answer if the job is really just carrying a couple of items occasionally, or strapping down something long. Low profile platforms sit closer to the roof line for less wind noise and easier garage clearance.

HZJ76, VDJ76 AND GDJ76 GUTTER FITMENT

Wagon gutter rails have stayed consistent across the 76 generations, so a rack cut for the V8 VDJ76 will usually suit both the earlier HZJ and the current GDJ. Clamps grip the rail directly, which keeps the roof panel untouched and lets the whole thing come off in an afternoon. Every listing states the body style it was built for. The 76 wagon roof is a different length to both the Troop Carrier and the 79 cab, so a rack from either will not transfer across.
